FAQs About Our New Name

The new name of Canadian Women for Women in Afghanistan is Right to Learn Afghanistan.

September 1, 2024

No. Our name has changed, but our work, our programs, and our focus have not.

We remain steadfast in our mission to make the right to learn a reality for Afghan women and girls and remain committed to our founding principles: to support the empowerment of women and girls, to stand in solidarity with them, and to do everything we can, as global citizens, to stand up for human rights.

There have also been many changes in Afghanistan, Canada, and the world since we launched the organization in 1998 that have paved the way for the programs we have today. While remaining focused on women’s empowerment, our programs are now far-reaching and impact not just women and girls, but their families, and not just in Afghanistan, but in many other regions where Afghans have been displaced.

As our programs continue to grow, so have our supporters, partners, and donors. We have built partnerships and engaged stakeholders from many parts of the world. While remaining proudly rooted in Canada, our new name allows us to invite everyone, regardless of who or where they are, to join us in upholding women’s rights and the right to learn. This ultimately strengthens our efforts to achieve our vision of an equitable world where women and girls are empowered with the freedom and opportunity to learn.

Changing our name to Right to Learn Afghanistan also clearly declares our purpose and reinforces that education is not a luxury, but a right that everyone is entitled to.

It is important that our name accurately reflects the core mission and purpose of upholding the fundamental right to education. Changing our name today will allow us to increase our reach, advance our mission, and do more for the women, girls and their families who depend on us, today and beyond.

Our new name was decided upon by a Naming Committee that included both staff and non-staff, with input and consultation from our community of chapters, board members, partners, founders, donors, stakeholders, and volunteers.

A Partner Toolkit is available at this link and is also found on the Rebranding page of our website.  The Partner Toolkit contains branding information to modify visible recognition of our partnership, official name change documents, and more.

Existing Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) do not require modification. Please reach out to any staff member or with questions.

Outside of our name change, our chapters remain unchanged and at the core of our community outreach. Please reach out directly to your local chapter chair or to with any chapter related questions.
