Becoming Right to Learn Afghanistan

On September 1, 2024, Canadian Women for Women in Afghanistan changed our legal name to Right to Learn Afghanistan.

Why are we changing our name?

“Canadian” – While preserving our strong Canadian roots, we now have staff, supporters, coalitions and partners from around the world who stand alongside Canadians in defending the right to learn.

“Women” – Our feminist organization is founded and led by women but inclusive to all. We invite everyone from all backgrounds and identities to join us on our mission to uphold human rights.

“for Women” – Our focus is empowering women, but we also serve entire Afghan families.

“in Afghanistan” – Our work has expanded beyond Afghanistan where we are also supporting thousands of displaced Afghans in neighboring countries and also here in Canada through our resettlement program.

Our New Name: Right to Learn Afghanistan

With over 25 years’ of experience advancing education in Afghanistan, our new name more vividly reflects our longstanding mission to make the right to learn a reality for Afghan women and girls.

As our organization makes lasting advances in upholding the fundamental right to a quality education, our new name opens more doors and invites everyone — on the basis of our common humanity — to join us in upholding women’s rights.

This change ultimately strengthens our efforts to achieve our vision of an equitable world where all women and girls are empowered with the freedom and opportunity to learn.

Our Focus Remains the Same

Alongside this growth, our principles and focus have remained the same including:

  • Our steadfast mission to make the right to learn a reality for Afghan women and girls
  • Our identity as a feminist organization that is proudly rooted in Canada
  • Our dedication to our founding principles including standing in solidarity and supporting empowerment of Afghan women and girls
  • Our unwavering commitment to defend human rights

Afghan women and girls need our solidarity and support now more than ever, and our new name not only clearly reflects our mission, but also provides a welcome opportunity to invite everyone, regardless of who or where they are, to help us achieve our vision of an equitable world where women and girls are empowered with the freedom and opportunity to learn.

We are grateful for our community of supporters who have helped us build the organization to what it is today. Thank you for your continued support as we undergo this exciting change that reflects our unwavering mission to uphold the fundamental right to learn!
